Start a Traineeship

Take your first step towards a professional career

If you are aged between 16 and 18 a Traineeship is an exciting way for you to develop the skills and confidence you need to take your first step towards a professional career. A Traineeship is a pre-apprenticeship programme which provides work experience, employability skills and maths and English skills development.

At JTL we can help you to gain a valuable insight into a range of careers in the building services engineering sector through our short Traineeship programme. This 10 to 16 week course, available at selected locations in England, will enable you to get a flavour of what it’s like to be a plumber, heating engineer, electrician or engineering maintenance operative and become better prepared to start an apprenticeship programme.

What you will learn:

  • Work preparation training (CV writing, interview techniques, job search and vital interpersonal skills)
  • Develop your maths and English skills
  • Four weeks on-site work experience with a local employer
  • Knowledge of relevant industries (e.g. electrical, plumbing) and the opportunities available
  • Health and safety knowledge
  • Taster sessions in our workshops to prepare you for your work experience
  • Essential tool skills, coached both on-site and in our dedicated training centres

Although we specialise in the building services engineering sector, we will provide you with the experience and skills to help you apply for any type of work. By completing a Traineeship programme you will have demonstrated a commitment to developing yourself and a willingness to work effectively with others, which will be well received by prospective employers

How you will benefit:

  • Work on-site with established employers and get a valuable reference to support your job applications
  • Gain a valuable insight into the construction sector
  • Develop your health and safety knowledge and awareness
  • Develop your communication skills and techniques to help you at interview
  • Get maths and English support and tips on how to get your CVs noticed by employers
  • Find out about how to progress to an apprenticeship

How much does it cost?

  • JTL will pay your travel expenses and for the safety boots and overalls you will need to work on a building site.
  • Your work experience employer will provide you with a hard hat, gloves and goggles to meet with mandatory Health and Safety requirements.
