Jon Evans – Traineeship

Having left school and been unsure of what to do with his future, Jon Evans tried a range of work experience roles without feeling that any of them were going anywhere.

I felt like I was just being used for casual labour”, the 20-year-old from Birmingham explained.

Unsure of which path to take, his uncle – JTL Training Officer Alan Evans – recommended a traineeship to him, and he hasn’t looked back since. He enjoyed the 12-week course immensely, and is now a fully-fledged plumbing apprentice, working for Interserve, having worked for them on an agency contract prior to a spot on their team becomes available.

As well as eight weeks spent learning a range of skills in the classroom, Jon’s traineeship course included four weeks of on-site training. “I really enjoyed it”, he explained“and knew straight away that it was the job for me.”

Jon further enhanced his reputation by scooping up JTL’s West Midlands Trainee of the Year Award 2014 in November.

Traineeships give young people the chance to check out if it really is the job for them, and also gives the employer a chance to assess potential recruits”, he said.

I didn’t have any idea about my career path when I finished school, but the traineeship has set me on the right track. I’d recommend it to any school leaver, and I can’t wait to be fully-qualified!
